Collaboration among healthcare professionals: the role of technology

Introduction

This is the experience of Daniele Maremmani, physiotherapist, owner and founder of "Studio Fisioterapico Fisiò", active since 2003 in orthopedic, sports and postural physiotherapy. Studio Fisiò, located in Pietrasanta, is a multipurpose facility with outpatient clinics for physiotherapy treatments, medical offices and a large gym area. Since 2017, thanks to the collaboration with the University of Siena, the structure has added an "Evidence Base Medicine" scientific research laboratory and a teaching laboratory for professionals. In the teaching laboratory, the latest technologies are used in rehabilitation and for the study of performance on athletes.

Centre experience

It is now known how important it is for a professional who works in the physiotherapy field to create a network of collaborations with the various health and medical professionals in order to offer a valuable service to their patients. The Fisiò studio has carried out this fundamental work of collaboration with dedication and professionalism, gaining, over the years, the trust of professionals and creating a dense network of cooperation with local doctors.

What has changed

Thanks to the introduction of baiobit, an innovative technology for the analysis of movement, within the rehabilitation process, it was possible to further expand this network of collaborations. baiobit was introduced in the Fisiò Physiotherapy Clinic starting from 2020, the tool is used in each phase of the rehabilitation process on:

- the first visit: to carry out the motor evaluation of the patients and to appropriately define the rehabilitation plan

- checkups: to monitor the effectiveness of the rehabilitation process

- the rehabilitation phase: exercises with biofeedback to guide and monitor the patient's active exercise phase

- the final visit: for the objective re-assessment of the outcomes

At the end of each test session, baiobit provides the therapist with an objective report on the patient's motor function. The report is usually shared both with the patient and with the medical staff following the patient's rehabilitation process. Thanks to the sharing of reports between the medical professionals involved, the latter are constantly informed on the progress made by patients within the therapeutic plan (e.g. results obtained, recovery times).

The exchange of information based on objective measures and not on the impressions of one or the other professional figure, has made it possible to create a relationship of trust between physiotherapists and doctors. Having the opportunity to follow the patient's recovery path more carefully, local doctors often and willingly turn to the Fisiò Physiotherapy Clinic: in particular, the introduction of the path supported by baiobit has increased by 15% the patients coming from this network of collaborations within 12 months. At the same time, it has increased the satisfaction of the patient, thanks to a greater involvement in the rehabilitation process and a better understanding of his own physical condition.

The use of technology has also made it possible to create a dedicated patient assessment and monitoring service, with unique characteristics which would not be present in the area, thus also managing to attract the collaboration of medical professionals beyond their own territorial district of habitual competence. In fact, several medical professionals have turned to the study to take advantage of the technological assessment offered, to have an objective monitoring of the progress of patients being treated in other rehabilitation realities, thus allowing a further increase in the services performed.

Conclusion

Thanks to the support of the baiobit technology, which offers an objective assessment supported by easy-to-read reports, the "Studio Fisioterapico Fisiò" thus offers a high quality rehabilitation program, much appreciated by patients who report a high degree of satisfaction and by healthcare professionals of the  countries who often and willingly turn to the studio both for instrumental evaluations and for the entire rehabilitation process.

In this way, in 12 months, from the introduction of baiobit, the Fisiò Physiotherapy studio managed to increase access to rehabilitation programs by 15% and implement a new technological assessment service that allowed to further expand the weekly services carried out in the structure.
